Yesterday a post in the Turing Church Facebook group (h/t Martin C.) mentioned a Skeptico interview with filmmaker Kent Forbes, the creator of “The Simulation Hypothesis,” a recent film about the reality-as-a-sim concept, consciousness and quantum physics. Review and related thoughts below.
Researching Carl Sagan’s thoughts on religion I stumbled upon a Washington Post article titled “Carl Sagan denied being an atheist. So what did he believe? [Part 1].” The article led me to the “mysterian” thoughts of the late and very lamented Martin Gardner.
My friend Ben Goertzel has written an awesome must-read post titled “Paranormal Phenomena, Nonlocal Mind and Reincarnation Machines.” As usual, I agree with all that Ben says. Read his post now, then my comments below.
Annalee Newitz wrote an article on io9 titled “Stop Putting New Age Pseudoscience in Our Science Fiction.” I respect Newitz and I like most of what she writes, but this article is total bullshit, and a disturbing indicator of where the dull bureaucrats of ultra-rationalism want to take science fiction, and science.
My friend Nupur asked me to write a short Turing Church introduction for her new Facebook page “India Awakens,” a community page for discussion of our ideas with an Indian slant. The page is mainly aimed at Indian but open to seekers from everywhere, so please Like the page and join the discussion.
Zoltan Istvan’s bestseller The Transhumanist Wager, often reviewed as a rabid anti-religion manifesto, includes the foundations of a new, Cosmist scientific religion, a “Third Way” alternative to traditional belief based on science, but at the same time able to offer all the benefits of religion.
On the evening of November 14th at the Huntsman Cancer Institute Auditorium, Dr Amit Goswami will be presenting a lecture on how the science of quantum physics is providing profound insights into our understanding of healing and the power of integrative health and medicine.
Dr Goswami is one of the world’s leading quantum physicists and is the author of many best selling books on theoretical physics including “The Self-Aware Universe” and “The Quantum Doctor”.
A PBS documentary film titled “The Quantum Activist” was aired on KUED last Spring. Continue reading Amit Goswami in Salt Like City, November 14, 2013
Martin Higgins, author of Human+, interviewed me for his The Eternities podcast and published a review on Disinfo | Transhumanist Spirituality — A New Religion for the Modern Age? Continue reading Transhumanist Spirituality — A New Religion for the Modern Age?
I was first alerted of the recent “TED pseudoscience debate” by Ben Goertzel’s “Statement on the Recent TED/Psi/Consciousness Controversy.” Then this morning I received the newsletter of the Institute for Noetic Sciences (IONS), with more info.
This is a continuation of my previous post on quantum consciousness (or not), also inspired by Ben Goertzel’s “AGI, Consciousness, Life, the Universe and Everything” on H+ Magazine. In a comment, I wrote: “I am often thinking of a meta-[Theory of Everything]ToE (actually an anti-ToE) that we may call “The [BIG] Infinite Fractal Onion Universe” or something like that.” Here are some thoughts on something like that.
