Robin Hanson’s future scenario in “The Age of Em: Work, Love and Life when Robots Rule the Earth” reminds me of Dante. On the one hand, many people will transcend (current concepts of) humanity and “transhumanize” – a word invented by Dante in Paradiso, Canto 1 – to become uploaded souls running on high performance computing circuitry. On the other hand, they will live in red-hot metal cities that create strong hot winds to disperse the excess heat generated by billions of uploads computing their way to continued existence. The infernal city of Dis, described by Dante in Inferno, Canto 8, comes to mind.
At the next Turing Church meeting in Second Life on Sunday, June 26, Robin Hanson will present his new book “The Age of Em: Work, Love and Life when Robots Rule the Earth.” The presentation will be followed by a discussion.
Fred Hoyle imagined a scientific theology with a hierarchy of Gods in the universe, from lower-case local gods all the way to an asymptotic cosmic God that emerges from the physical universe, comes into full being at the end of time, controls space and time with subtle quantum messages and time loops, seeds the universe with Life, and works through Life.
I haven’t posted for a while because I have been studying and focusing on my forthcoming book, but I want to say something about my current studies and thoughts on physics, divine action, and resurrection, inspired by observations and comments by readers, especially Spud.
On on the 55th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s pioneering space flight, Internet investor and science philanthropist Yuri Milner and physicist Stephen Hawking announced a plan for our firsts steps to the stars: Breakthrough Starshot.
Every week I will re-post here the new entries in the Irrational Mechanics News page, which is frequently updated with links and short summaries.
The Irrational Mechanics wiki is open to friends and collaborators, and partly open to the public. It contains several inter-related projects inspired by a positive attitude toward highly imaginative science and technology, including the Akashic Physics Roadmap (closed) and the India Awakens Conference (open). There is an open News page frequently updated with links and short summaries.
Yesterday, April 9, the 2016 Annual Conference of the Mormon Transhumanist Association was held in in Provo, Utah, at the Provo City Library. The Conference reaches beyond Mormonism and is the de-facto annual conference of the religious/spiritual transhumanist community. The Conference was live-streamed and the recording of the stream is online on YouTube. You can watch more than nine hours of awesome talks at the intersection of transhumanism and religion.
I have long been persuaded that there are strong parallels between transhumanism and religion, not only “new” religions but the traditional religions of our grandfathers as well. There are, of course, differences, but I prefer to emphasize the parallels. After some deep reading and thinking, I realize that Christianity and Transhumanism are closer than I thought, and much closer than you probably think.
Psychiatric facilities across the United States are at breaking point after the number of people claiming to be sent from the future to stop Donald Trump reached epidemic proportions, a semi-serious News Thump article trending on Facebook reports. But I have an alternative theory.
